Understanding Inequality

with Jean Potuchek

Class has begun

Social inequality poses a dilemma for American society, pitting the ideology of equal opportunity and the American Dream against the uncomfortable reality that it is harder to get ahead in the United States than in other western industrialized societies. This course will examine both the facts of inequality in America and the social mechanisms that create and shape inequality.

Jean Potuchek holds a PhD in Sociology from Brown University and has spent several decades exploring and teaching about inequality. At Gettysburg College, where she spent the last twenty-five years of her teaching career, she was honored with the Award for Distinguished Teaching
