Religious Conversion: What is it?

with Steve Piker

Class is canceled

Paul on the road to Damascus? Conversion abounds in the U.S.  It is an integral part of the life of the convert, in which the convert has creative agency.  We'll look at both continuities and changes across the conversion experience by consulting detailed case materials. We will get to know a couple of converts real well.  Some lecture, more discussion.  A suggested book to read is The Last Year of the War by Shirley Nelson (Harper and Row). It’s not necessary to read this book, but it may enhance your experience. It’s available as a used text inexpensively on Amazon.

Steve is an anthropologist; and has done field work in Thailand and the U.S. and taught 44 years at Swarthmore College. Religion is a career-long interest, both teaching and research. He’s offered approximately 25 courses at 4 of Maine's senior colleges, and has lived in Yarmouth for 12 years, two blocks from two of his grandchildren, neither of whom are still children.
